Heart and Mind – Dr. Lou Yock – April 2021

It is busy right now.  Spring is always the busiest time of year at our church, from March through the Annual Meeting.  And even with being closed, this year is no exception.  To name a few of the things happening all at once:

In addition to the regular duties being attended to, like the budget discussions and the Annual Campaign, there is the special focus of the Safe Congregation Committee.  Right now it is dealing with cyber security, and studying the best ways of how and when to meet in the church building, given the ever changing pandemic circumstances.  It is also tackling how to make sure everyone, near and far, feels included and safe in our events and programs.

The Worship Committee has begun the search for the new Music Director. Spread the word that we are looking to hire.  Resumes can be sent to the church office, or if there are questions, have prospective candidates email or call.  A job description is available—contact the office.

The Children’s Religious Education Committee offers a monthly curriculum to parents, if they would want to receive it, and is busy getting the nursery ready for when we return to the building. Some of the new nursery furniture has arrived and will soon be unpacked and set-up.  More items are coming.  It will be a very inviting room.

The Building and Ground committee is finishing up the punch-list in the the library/meeting room, having painted it, put up new lights, and is now waiting for the book shelves and the carpet.  I especially like the white trim.  It will be an inviting space for small group meetings.

The Membership Committee is developing the new volunteer recognition service, and figuring out how to make sure everyone is able to stay in contact with the events of the church even while we are scattered around.  We may be doing a “UU and You” class soon, via zoom, where we invite people interested in becoming members to explore the history and vision of our church, and share their stories with us.

EAAT is getting ready to do the new plantings of native plants around the addition, as well as keeping on with making sure our church building is energy efficient.  Earth Sunday is this month, and between services and AFFEW plans, things are really springing.

And finally the salon is a great success, and seems to get bigger with each passing week.  There are plans right now to continue them through April, and for a couple in May.  After that…we will see.  Adult Religious Education is also planning classes on the books Being Mortal and Finish Strong, and will also make plans with a class on aging.

Whew!  And I know I have left things out.  Spring has sprung and our busy season is upon us.  I wish everyone a Happy Easter, and look forward to getting together with everyone.  It’s sooner rather than later now.
