TOPIC: The Books of Our Lives Wednesday, April 9 – Host: Esther Fyk
Every book is a journey. In this Salon we will explore which books have had special meaning for you, and at what stage in your life these books showed up for you. Some people find continuing inspiration from the Bible or from holy books of other religions. Others find inspiration in poetry. Some prefer to escape into a world of fantasy or mystery. Francis Bacon said: “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.”
Questions to be considered:
– Describe a single book that has had a profound influence on you and has been a continuing source of inspiration. What particularly inspired you? How did the book come into your life and when?
– Do you have a quotation or particular passage from a book that has stayed with you?
– Has your amount of reading varied across your lifetime? If so, why do you think that’s true?
– Are you reading anything currently?
(Wednesdays April 9th and 23rd will be the last sessions of this Salon Season. Early in the day of each Salon, everyone on the church email list will receive a Zoom invitation with a link to join at 7 pm. Each participant will have an equal amount of time to share their thoughts on the questions posed by the host. People who prefer only to listen are welcome too!).
